I was introduced to a funny State Department tradition, the Reverse Shower, or Apartment Give Away. Whenever someone leaves, they have a little party where they give away things they don't want to take with them. Space is very limited on the helicopters and buses out of town. The departing person gathers all of the stuff they are giving away in a box and holds each item up. Each person then decides if they want the item or not. It's really funny to see what relatively useless items people collect over the course of a year. Everything from vitamins to curtain rods are up for the taking. Nothing is wasted in Iraq.
I love that. When somebody quits at work. During their notice time before they leave those that are left put little post it notes on their stuff we want. Half as a joke, only half.

We have a somewhat morbid joke around here that is somebody is about to leave the wire that instead of wishing them good luck, we tell them "I get first dibs on your stuff".

Be safe this week -- and good luck. And Happy (early) 4th of July. Two countries celebrating freedom this week. That's nice.
