One of the guys receives a box every so often from a group called Operation Shoebox. He has been adopted by a school in New Jersey. I can tell they are packed by kids because we get toys with the candy and other items. The girls must have picked out the Beanie Babbies and the boys sent Hot Wheels. It is really fun to watch everyone pick out their one or two items that they can't get in the embassy store. The rest of the goodies go on a community table and everything disappears within a couple of days. We collect the toys and donate them to St. George's Church (see some of the earlier posts about this special group of Christians). There is little in Iraq which is thrown away, I guess you could say scarcity is environmentally friendly.
I am with Soldier's Angels and sometimes when you don't know someone personally, it's a struggle for what to put in the box. I always think of a person's face, kind of like, what the heck did she send THIS for???
But I have found that everything finds a home. When I can say to a soldier, what do you need, what I can send that will help in some small way, they'll tell me generally. And then I try to add in puzzle books or a game -- I've sent Nerf footballs, yo-yos, handheld Yatzee games. I sent a Rubik's cube one time. Kinda whatever strikes my fancy in the toy aisle at Target!! Something to get a little bit of a smile, a distraction for a time.
Any suggestions from you or your guys I would appreciate!!
Thanks,
Kath
