We went to the high desert and I was amazed at the lack of vegetation. I felt the environment was serene even though the area we were training in had been fought over for centuries and centuries. It is amazing how an environment such as this consumes all traces of mankind in a matter of hours and days. Tracks are covered by swirling sand and the dunes and berms obstruct the temporary manmade objects.
We had to sleep in our temporary classrooms since this was a small facility. Imagine 40 of your closest friends in one room, elbow to elbow. This included the female members of our group. Up to this point, they were segregated into small groups of 1-2 in separate quarters. They were not prepared for the full force of 20-30 men snoring at close quarters. They woke up in pure disbelief that men could snore at the same decibel levels as a freight train. Luckily, I was prepared for such an eventuality. I had my Zune player and noise reduction wrap around ear pods. This was a trick I had learned back at Ft Jackson.
The training went well and we returned to camp to catch our flight.
